Maybe, the degrading quality is less noticeable for people using their Macs for basilar internet browsing/e-mail/Spotify routine. I mean, I've never had a single issue with my past Macs. Also, even tho a bit OT, since I've got my MBP: keyboard issues, battery issues, webcam issues, built-in display issues (due to failing flat cable), palm rest discoloration issues, etc. Despite initializing my MBP two times, BS keeps kernel panicking my Mac closed-shell mode with a secondary monitor is horrifying (btw, why the f*** they removed font smoothing? If you don't have a 2K/4K monitor, viewing experience is comparable to Windows XP times) deciding to end support for 32-bit apps with Catalina makes sense for M1s, but Intel Macs should have kept it (85% of my Steam lib is unusable). I'm not complaining about looks, nor about other bells and whistles: I'm complaining about quality – it lacks quality, and it's a huge downgrade in this sense. So I'm confident, and I feel legitimated, in saying that Big Sur is absolutely the worst version of the OS I've ever used I'd even say it's painful. And there’s a new gallery view in Finder for viewing images.

So I continued getting Macs, and got a Mac mini with 10.4, an iMac with 10.5, a MacBook Air with 10.7 and, four years ago, a MacBook Pro (2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports). Then, four years later, I received a secondhand G3 iBook running Mac OS 9.2 and OS X.1. My experience with Macs dates back to 2000 I had a Performa 5200 running System 7. If they don't, I will simply move on and just stick to Linux. I do prefer macOS over any other OS and I just hope they stop putting in place more and more limitations on what you as the user and OWNER of the hardware can do with it. I am also not an Apple fanboy and simply choose their products that make sense for me. I knew that it would be the case and I still went for it because of the benefits like the processing power and battery efficiency, but having been with Apple since 2007 (yes, the switch to Intel), I am not overly enthusiastic about the Apple hardware not being universal anymore.
On the other hand I have not yet see any issues with the new MacBook with the M1 chip other than the inherent limitations of Apple's ARM-based architecture where it comes to running other OS's and a few apps simply not working. I tried it twice thinking there may be something I missed, but nope.
Then I created the USB installer for Bir Sur, wiped the drive clean and reinstalled Big Sur all by itself.

And yes, I did reinstall macOS once I noticed the issue after the original in-place upgrade to Big Sur. Sure, these work, but at least for the Recovery boot I should not have to use any workarounds. But yes, there are work arounds for both issues: I can use a USB Big Sur installation media for booting into Recovery and I can switch between Windows and macOS by booting with the Option key pressed. Can I live without these? Well, I do need to boot into Linux and that's why I kept the old Intel MacBook. Also, the new integrity protections don't let rEFInd boot loader workĪnd will prevent macOS to boot if installed. I upgraded the Intel one to Big Sur and overall there are no big issues EXCEPT the fact that there is no Recovery partition anymore - Command+R boots into Internet Recovery which is for an old El Capitan OSX not even Big Sur. I have a MacBook Pro M1 and and 2015 MacBook Pro. Big Sur introduces a beautiful redesign and is packed with new enhancements for key apps including Safari, Messages, and Maps, as well as new privacy features. I plan to try using 10.13 in a Parallels VM in 11.x to keep some OS features Apple abandoned. macOS Big Sur, the latest version of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, is now available to Mac users as a free software update. More to the point, I'm alss running into issues that applications I use now require a newer OS. But how about someplace other than California like Himalaya or Everest? Those are lofty marketing names.) I've been on MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and have resisted moving to operating system modifications named after a desert, an island and a coast line in order. It lives and breaths by selling new hardware not OS's, vis-a-vis Microsoft. Do NOT assume Apple has the best interest in mind for your hardware.

ProfDraper's post above is a good example of how to approach updating your OS. I doubt if much effort was expended to address glitches found in a 2015 MacBook Air with 4GB of RAM running 11.x (the OPs computer.) That is of course if Apple actually regression tested the OS on that machine. To the contrary, it focuses on current and planned roadmap hardware. Apple does not change (update?) its OS versions to better support older hardware.
